Bio

Robert L. Gibbs Robert L. Gibbs is a Partner at Gibbs Travis PLLC in Jackson, Mississippi. He attended Tougaloo College where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1976 and he earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1979. After leaving law school, Gibbs practiced law at Southeast Mississippi Legal Services in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Later Gibbs served the Eleventh Circuit District as an Assistant District Attorney and then spent ten years with the Mississippi Attorney General's Office. At the Attorney General's Office, Gibbs served as head of the Civil Litigation Division and as Deputy Attorney General, in charge of Local Government/Opinions. In 1990, Gibbs was elected to the position of Circuit Judge for the Seventh Circuit District, where he served for seven years. While a Circuit Judge, Gibbs served as Chairman of the Conference of Circuit Judges and he instructed judges from across the United States as a faculty member of the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada. Gibbs also served on the faculty of the Institute for Faculty Excellence in Judicial Education, where he was a contributing author to the textbook "On Faculty Excellence in Judicial Education. " Gibbs focuses his practice on mass tort litigation, business litigation, product liability, white collar criminal defense and alternative dispute resolution. His work in litigation has earned him recognition in Chambers USA, a London based published guide to America's leading lawyers. He is also ranked in the prestigious Best Lawyers in America directory as well as Super Lawyers' Top 50 in Mississippi. Gibbs has also served in leadership roles in numerous professional organizations. He has served as Commissioner of the Mississippi Bar, President of the Charles Clark Chapter of the America Inns of Court, President of the Mississippi Bar Foundation, President of the Fellow of Mississippi Young Lawyers, and President of the Fifth Circuit Bar Association. He is a Fellow of the Mississippi Bar Foundation, Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Fellow of the American Bar Association and Fellow of Mississippi Young Lawyers. He is a member of the Mississippi Bar, Capital Area Bar, Magnolia Bar Association, National Bar Association, and American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). Gibbs has been appointed by the Mississippi Supreme Court to serve on the Complaint Tribunal, the task force to study Gender Fairness in Mississippi Courts and on the committee on Bar Admissions. Gibbs has also served on the ABA's Law School Site Accreditation Team. Gibbs is active in the Jackson Community. He serves as Chair of the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau, Chair of Hope Federal Credit Union, and Chair of Mission Mississippi. He is a former President of the 100 Black Men of Jackson, past Board Chair of the Jackson Arts Alliance and the United Way of the Capital Area. He serves on the Board of Directors for the following organizations: First Commercial Bank, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Salvation Army the Jackson Chamber, Mississippi Museum of Arts, and HOPE Enterprise Corporation. Gibbs was co-chair of the effort that led to the historic passage of the $150,000,000.00 bond referendum for the Jackson Public Schools. Gibbs has also served as one of the final round judges for the High School Mock Trial competition for 25 years, usually serving as the presiding judge. For his work in the Bar and the community, Gibbs has received numerous awards and honors.
