Bio

EDUCATION
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, B.A., 1974
University of North Carolina School of Law, J.D., 1976
BAR ADMISSION
North Carolina, 1976
I was born in Asheville and grew up around lawyers, including my father, his partners and friends and my mother’s father and brother. I was fascinated by their stories.

I watched my first jury trial when I was 10 years old. At age 14, I started working in my father’s law office during the summers and  holidays. By the time I graduated from Asheville High in 1970, I knew that wanted to be a lawyer.

I attended UNC Chapel Hill for both undergraduate and law school. I was eager to get  back to Asheville and begin my career. So, I took advantage of the last year of a program that allowed me to take the Bar examination and be sworn in as a lawyer after my second year in law school. I graduated from law school in December 1976.

From the beginning, my practice has involved representing people who have been injured by the negligence of others, including automobile, tractor-trailer, motorcycle, pedestrian and bicycle wreck cases.

My career as a lawyer has been more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. Nothing is more satisfying than being able to help a client who has been injured or a family who has lost a parent, child or spouse because an individual or corporation chose to not follow the rules.

I have been a speaker at continuing education seminars for other lawyers on personal injury and constitutional law. I  have also  given numerous presentations to local high schools, colleges, churches and civic groups on constitutional law.

I am rated AV, the highest rating, by Martindale-Hubbell, which is the oldest peer review rating service in the country. I have also been selected for Martindale-Hubbell’s Bar Register of Preeminent Attorneys in North Carolina in the fields of personal injury and medical malpractice.

I was also selected by the North Carolina Super Lawyers magazine in 2012 in the field of personal injury practice, an honor bestowed on less than five percent of the state’s lawyers.

When I am not working, I enjoy hiking and camping in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, listening to local musicians and riding my motorcycle on the many wonderful roads in our area.

One of my fondest memories is a five-week motorcycle trip that I took with my son in 2001 that started in Asheville and then went through the Canadian Rockies and down the West Coast to the  Big Sur area of California. I also enjoy spending time with my two children and grandchildren.
