Bio

George R. Thompson of Thompson, O’Neil P.C. in Traverse City, Michigan, has pursued litigation on behalf of individuals, primarily in the area of personal injury, for nearly forty years. A summa cum laude graduate from, and the Barlow Trophy recipient at Alma College, Thompson is a 1978 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. He was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1988 and has represented individuals before the state and federal appellate courts for more than thirty years. He was first certified in Trial Advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in 1991.

Thompson maintained long-term memberships in the Michigan and national Associations for Justice, as well as civil and consumer rights groups including Primerus and the Trial Lawyers for Public Justice. He has served his community on the executive boards of the local Community Mental Health, the regional Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan, and the Safe Harbor Emergency Shelter, and he also lead the drive that created the Munson Manor Hospitality House for families of hospitalized patients. In 2003 he was a national finalist for the Primerus Community Service Award and he has received the Local Bar Association's Community Service and Pro Bono awards. He has taught as an adjunct professor at the local Community College and for Western Michigan University.

Thompson has chaired the Civil Procedure Committee of the State Bar of Michigan, and has been a frequent lecturer for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education since his first presentation in 1985. He is the author of several litigation-related articles. He served on a joint committee of the State Bar and Michigan Medical Society relating to medico- legal issues and he previously served on the Michigan Trial Lawyer Association Executive Committee and its No-Fault Task Force. He has lectured at the state-wide No Fault Conference as recently as 2016. He has also lectured on trial and liability issues to the Municipal Section of the State Bar, the Michigan Lodging Association, the Michigan Association of Cardiologists, and the Annual Meeting of the Association of County Road Commissions. Thompson has been identified in the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers since 1997 and in 2018 he was honored by Martindale-Hubbell as the Northern Michigan Lawyer of the Year. He has been identified as a U.S. News and World Report Michigan "Superlawyer" 11 of the 12 years this list has been published in Michigan and in 2009 he was invited to become an honorary fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America.
