Bio

Benjamin E. Griffith is principal in Griffith Law Firm of Oxford, MS and enjoys a federal and state civil litigation practice with emphasis on defending municipalities, counties, and school districts in voting rights and election law litigation under the Voting Rights Act, civil rights litigation under the First, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, and private sector insureds in premises liability and insurance coverage disputes. After receiving a B.A. in English and German from the University of Mississippi in 1973, he earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1975, where he is now an Adjunct Professor for the law school’s skills courses in municipal law practice and election law. He has served as defense counsel at the trial and appellate level in the Fifth, Fourth and Eleventh Circuits in federal civil litigation.
He serves on the ABA Board of Governors and is a member of its Finance and Internal Operations Committee, and also serves as the Board’s liaison to the ABA Standing Committee on Election Law which he chaired from 2010 to 2013. He has served as Chair of the ABA Section of State & Local Government Law and the Section’s International Committee, and President of the National Association of County Civil Attorneys. He has also served as Chair of the Mississippi Bar's Government Law Section and President of the Mississippi Association of County Board Attorneys. He has been an active member of the International Municipal Lawyers Association since 1992, serves as Chair of IMLA’s International Committee, is an IMLA Local Government Fellow and has served as Chair of IMLA’s Counties and Special Districts Division. He has been an active member of Defense Research Institute’s Governmental Liability Committee since 1983. He is General Counsel for the World Jurist Association and served twice as WJA National President for the United States. His work on the international level through WJA and IMLA extends to consultation and training in electoral systems, local governance transparency and application of the Rule of Law in emerging democracies, including the Republic of Georgia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
He is President of the William C. Keady Chapter of American Inns of Court, and since 2006 he has been recognized by his peers with inclusion in Best Lawyers in America® and MidSouth Super Lawyers®, and since 1994 has maintained board certification in Civil Trial Advocacy by the ABA-sanctioned National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is editor of the three editions of America Votes! Challenges to Modern Election Law and Voting Rights (ABA 2008, 2012, 2016), and recently authored a chapter on Voting Rights and Remedies from an International Perspective, contained in International Voting Remedies (ABA 2017, J. Young, Ed.). Ben is married to the former Kathy Lee Orr, and they have two children, Clark and Julie. They are members of First Presbyterian Church of Oxford.
